Satcom expands opportunities for critical utility infrastructure development in Africa

01 May 2024

African utility enterprises are striving to modernise their grids and expand services to underserved areas, and smart grid systems are becoming the norm on the continent. These smart grids manage power distribution more effectively, enabling reduced energy losses, lower operational costs, and improved service quality. Wireless communications have proven instrumental in supporting the provision of utilities across Africa. Satellite connectivity is essential for surveillance, IoT, and remote monitoring capabilities, supporting operations in challenging environments. Leveraging real-time data, the utility sector can shift from a reactive response to preventive management, effectively bridging the technological disparities across Africa. Its politically neutral nature fosters transparency in data sharing across borders. Satcom is also proving invaluable in empowering a remote workforce with reliable connectivity. Using tools like smart goggles and real-time communications, remote workers can leverage the expertise of technical staff based in HQ, which can enable them to resolve problems and accomplish many tasks over one visit. With the introduction of low-earth orbit (LEO) networks, a lot of applications that have been previously limited to GSM coverage, can now be used at faraway sites. Such technological advancement will unlock new business opportunities, fostering the development of public-private partnerships in the industry.
