Iridium Certus® Aids Collection of Vital Biological Data

31 Mar 2020

In 2019, IEC Telecom had the distinct privilege to partner with The IK Foundation and deliver vital connectivity solutions to the pioneering ecological study unit located on the protected environment of Forlandet National Park in Prins Karls Forland, an island off the west coast of Svalbard. With a remote location, difficult terrain, and unique biosphere, The IK Foundation Field Station’s limited connectivity presented incomparable logistical and communications challenges. Further, the need of the hour was an autonomous communications system that could withstand severe snow as well as operate in damp conditions as access to the island is only permitted for 10 days annually.

IEC Telecom delivered Certus TM technology on portable, lightweight Thales MissionLINK terminals to ensure a robust communications system with truly global coverage, efficient back-up services, and on-demand access to scientific data. “This is a fascinating project and it’s rewarding to be able to help the scientific community and assist in providing valuable information to benefit future generations,” said Erlend Nilsen, Sales Director, IEC Telecom.

Not only does The Field Station generate round-the-clock scientific data, IEC Telecom ensured that the station could be monitored remotely, enabling troubleshooting and system upgrades without an engineer onsite.
